Creative Assembly, the developer of games such as Total War and Alien: Isolation, has opened a new studio. The third unit opened in Newcastle, after studios in Sussex, England, and Sofia, Bulgaria.

The new studio will be called Creative Assembly North (CA North) and will be managed by a flexible team. They will be working on an unannounced project with the main CA studio in Sussex.

Giselle Stewart, former leader of Reflections, developer of games like Ubisoft’s Driver series, The Crew and Grow Home/Grow Up, will head the new Newcastle studio. “It is extremely exciting to launch a new development studio from the ground up with the full support and knowledge of one of the UK’s oldest and largest studios. We will foster cross-site collaboration by embracing flexibility, rapid iteration and creativity.

Creative Assembly plans to grow with around 100 new developers (both creative and technical roles) working on a new, yet unannounced project in the near future. They say this project is in the “early prototype stage” of fast-moving iterative development. The new studio will also house a team that will focus on “continuous improvement”. This will mean “supporting the collaboration with Creative Assembly, which aims for sustainable continuous improvement in tools, workflows and development experience”.

Creative Assembly is now under the umbrella of SEGA and has enjoyed strong growth for a decade after having great success with games like Alien: Isolation and the Total War: Warhammer trilogy. They are currently working on new expansions for Total War: Warhammer called Forge of the Chaos Dwarfs and Hyenas. “Creative Assembly North positions us in one of the UK’s biggest gaming cities. In addition to bringing more incredible talent to our projects, the establishment of a new continuous improvement team will bring sustainable benefits to all of our teams by contributing to an ever-evolving development experience for our people,” said Gareth Edmondson, studio director of Creative Assembly.
