For decades, SEGA has been an essential element in the video game industry, largely thanks to Sonic the Hedgehog as well as Yakuza, Phantasy Star Online, and others. Nowadays, the metaverse is on the agenda of many game companies that want to invest in new technological trends, and the Japanese game giants have decided to jump on this train as well.
Since its launch in the early 90s, Sonic the Hedgehog has remained one of the company’s most recognizable franchises over the years. Thanks to the last two movies, the game has become increasingly popular, with a growing fan base and appeal. New games in the series were also announced last month. However, one of the company’s latest job postings has revealed the company’s metaverse plans.
In the job posting, the producer of Sonic is looking for a senior producer for mobile and metaverse games to work at the Burbank office. Accordingly, the senior manufacturer will assist in the delivery of Sonic the Hedgehog mobile and metaverse products that will be developed for the global market. As seen in recent months, SEGA has started to attach great importance to the Sonic series, especially with its upcoming games.
Additionally, the company stated that digital versions of classic Sonic games will be discontinued in May following the release of Sonic Origins. This could also be an indication that SEGA is preparing the franchise for the future of the metaverse. Of course, SEGA is not the only company pushing for the metaverse. Bandai Namco has already invested $130 million in metaverse, and more recently, Epic has partnered with LEGO for its own metaverse-based project.
