Valve has announced the criteria and process for game featuring on Steam, one of the world’s most popular digital gaming platforms. The company aims to adopt a transparent approach for the discovery mechanism, and focus on principles, such as not allowing advertising, enabling better recommendations for players.
Erik Peterson, the representative of the Steam Business Team, discussed the guiding principles in a video posted on the Steamworks Development YouTube channel. Peterson states that Steam has two primary goals. The first goal is to help users discover games that match their interests and preferences. The second goal is to establish strong bonds within the gaming community while creating new connections between users and developers.
Valve believes that, as an equal platform, Steam should not sell advertising place. This means that publishers and developers cannot buy featuring for their games. Visibility happens mostly automatically, therefore marketing is completely free.
Peterson explains that games are not chosen manually, but through an automated system, which selects and features games based on user activity, or in other words, player interest. Moreover, the platform automatically selects games every week, giving less popular games a chance to appear on the main page.
Peterson also highlights that the platform’s success lies in establishing the long-term connections between the players and developers rather than adopting a pay-to-win approach. Because it is important that players trust the games they find relevant and interesting. Ensuring the security of developer accounts is also among the top priorities of Valve.
